Character[/b]
Name: Keia
Age: 17
Gender: female
Rank: Candidate/Apprentice Beastcrafter
Mutated?(If so what is their ability): Yes. Keia's mutation is not obvious; in fact, anyone who hasn't tried to pick her up is unaware. Her bones are hollow, making her very light. A side effect of this is that her bones break more easily than normal, but not so easily that every time she falls a bone snaps. She tends to be more graceful than other girls her age, simply because she doesn't have to manage as much weight.
Location: Skysong Weyr
Appearance: Overall, Keia tends toward a dancer-like appearance, due in part to her mutation and part to her heritage. She is medium height, about 5'5", with lean musculature. Due to this, she can't lift heavy weights, but she has more endurance than the bodybuilder type. She exhibits great control over her own body, seemingly invincible to the awkward phase teenagers encounter.
Keia is otherwise quite normal in her appearance. She is mildly pretty; she lacks any remarkable features and doesn't stand out in a crowd, but she wouldn't be called homely even by the harshest critic.
She sports wavy brown hair, defying the definition of both curly and straight. When pulled straight, it reaches to mid back, but when left to hang free, it falls to just above the bottom of her shoulderblade. Keia loves her hair, and takes great care to brush it every day. She likes to wear it down, but due to her chosen craft, this is often impractical. On most days, she puts it up into a high runner's tail, or a long braid down her back.
Keia's blue eyes are an anomaly in her family. Neither side of her family has had eyes in any shade other than brown for at least two generations. Other than this inconsistency, Keia's facial features follow her father's; a medium sized upturned nose, and lips slightly on the thin side.
Keia has retained the leanness of childhood, years after she was supposed to grow out of it. Her breasts remain small, and her hips have barely widened. She is most definitely not built for childbirth, and would probably have major problems delivering if she ever were to get pregnant.
Personality: Keia is the type of person who hates being led around, hates to take orders, hates to even be in a co-leadership position. This presents a major problem when she is forced to work in a group with similarly-minded people; she likes to be in control of everything, and finds it difficult to submit to others. It is in part due to this that she took on an Apprenticeship that required very little work with others; she knows all too well that if someone else tries to take control of her, she will get angry.
This leads to another aspect of Keia's personality. She is always worried for the good of other people. She likes to think things through before acting, considering all the possible results of a decision. She prides herself on making the right choice most of the time, but she does need a bit of time to make that choice. When placed in a situation where time is of the essence, Keia tends to make choices she deems as bad, and she avoids these times as well as she can.
Keia is a woman of many extremes. It's rare to find something or someone she just likes, or has a mild distaste for. There are basically three levels on the Keia scale: hate, indifferent, and love, with very few variations. She tends to rely heavily on first impressions of people, and doesn't change her opinion often without good reason. She defends these opinions heavily, which gives her a bit of a hotheaded reputation bad home and among many of her friends.
History: Our story begins with a greenrider and a bluerider, Kelir and P'iar. While they weren't in love with each other, they were good friends. When Kelir's green rose, P'iar's blue ended up winning the Flight, which brought the two closer than ever before. Kelir turned up pregnant, and while P'iar was more the "I-hate-commitment" type, he decided to stay with his best friend through the birth of Keia.
Keia grew up mostly in the company of her father, who turned out to really love the baby, and his blue. Kelir liked the child well enough, but seemed to be even less attracted to commitment than P'iar. She learned to walk in the company of P'iar and Halseth, his blue. Kelir regretted missing the key moments in her daughter's life, and from the age of two onwards, she took over most of the parenting responsibilities.
While Keia grew, her parents were busy attracting the negative attention of the Weyrleaders. Fort was historically a hidebound Weyr, and Kelir and P'iar were quite progressive in their views. They never committed a crime, but with their consistent promotion of new jobs for dragonriders, the Weyrleaders were eager to be rid of them at any chance they got.
Keia was, of course, oblivious to these changes in the political relations of her parents. She spent her days during these times playing with her peers and running around the Weyr leading her little band of five-year-olds on a quest for trouble. Well, not exactly a quest for trouble, but that seemed to be a side effect more often than not.
Until she was twelve, Keia lived a perfectly normal life. She had decided on her craft early in life, following in her mother's footsteps into Beastcrafting. She ventured down to the stables one morning and bravely declared her ambitions to the Craftmaster, who bravely laughed in her face. Keia didn't give up; she never gave up. Morning after morning for thirteen days she said the same words to the same person, and received the same answer. On the fourteenth day, however, she was given a chance.
Finally, she said to herself. She threw herself into lessons with the vigor of someone twice her age, trying valiantly to win the Master's favor. She did eventually succeed, gaining a grudging acceptance on the part of her teacher. He had never liked girls getting into the harsher crafts, Beastcraft being one of them. But he couldn't deny that Keia had the spirit to succeed.
When she was just over the age of thirteen, Keia was hit by acid in a mad rush to get inside before Thread fell. She barely noticed the itching rash until five days later, when she collapsed in lessons. She was hurried to the infirmary, where it was determined that she was following the same path as others who had been struck by the green stuff. Keia doesn't remember the sevenday she spent in an ice bath to bring down her fever, doesn't remember the worry about her losing weight, but does remember her body filling out again but not gaining any weight. The Pernese healers couldn't figure out the cause of this; they just attributed it to the acid.
Keia didn't return to classes until nearly two months after she was struck. When she did come back, it was to an entirely different class, and this bothered her. She was now behind her peers, and determined to catch up. With renewed strength, she dedicated herself to surpassing this class of apprentices.
It was a difficult endeavor, but after hours of lost sleep and many more spent trying to train runners, Keia managed to catch up to her friends and classmates. Then, the unthinkable happened.
The Queen of Fort's most recent clutch hatched very strange colors. They were promptly exiled. Keia's parents decided to follow the "abominations" to the Southern Continent for two reasons: one, their own daughter was affected by the acid, and two, they were hopeful the new Weyr would be run differently that the one in the North.
Keia's schooling was considerably interrupted, and the progress she had worked so hard to make was demolished the moment she climbed aboard her father's blue and went between to Skysong Weyr. She was angry for the first few days, but then remembered the extensive teasing she had gotten for being one of the affected. She was equal in her friend's eyes to the new colors of dragon.
She has lived at Skysong with her parents for three years now, continuing her apprenticeship as well as possible. She tries hard, and with the new clutch on the Sands, she hopes she can follow in her parent's footsteps and Impress.
