Character[/b]
Name:Grylock, nickname: Gry ((G’lock when he impresses))
Age:16
Gender:Male
Rank: Candidate
Mutated?(If so what is their ability): Yes. Grylock has been accused of being jinxed and bad luck, but this is not true. His power is of improbability. In his general vicinity, generally a 75 feet radius around him, he can affect the laws of probability around him to shift towards the improbable. It’s not of luck of any kind and does not work for or against him. It just makes the unlikely and strange happen around him. The limit to his power is it only affects small things, like dice or a small bit metal on a strap. He really has no true control except at times of stress he can get the power to work on command, but still has no control over what exactly will happen.
Location: Skysong Weyr
Appearance: With hundreds of bruises, a missing front tooth, and blacken eyes, Grylock always seems to be in a constant state of healing. Which he was. Grylock seems to always have a smile plastered on his face and his eyes always look bright and eager. They are a they are a brilliant shade of blue in color and his hair is in a wind blown style that is rich brown. His skin is lightly tanned, but riddled with scars all over. He stands at 5’7” and has a lean frame, but he’s still young and has some growing to do. He usually wears obnoxiously bright colors, usually primary colors. What he always has on him is his father's googles and riding straps.
Personality:
Grylock is an eight-turn-old kid stuck in a sixteen-turn-old body. Remember when little kids dreamed of becoming dragonriders, but they eventually grow out of it? Yeah, that never happened to Gry. He yearns the exciting life of a dragonrider. The idea of rescuing people, fighting thread, and having a life long partner who will stick by you forever is his dream comes true. He has an extremely naïve view on how the world really works and how people interact. It’s too innocent, like all the bad things in his life never fazed him. This couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s because of all his hardships that he feels the need make the world a better place and the best way to go about it in his mind is believe it can be better. He was told he was for greatness, and by Faranath’s Egg he was going to be great and it doesn’t matter what anyone else has to say about it.
There is a reason this guy looks like he’s been in a fight every day. Not only is he annoyingly full of energy, but he also has a big mouth that he doesn’t know when to keep shut. He usually gets in trouble for it and ends up getting beat up. But it’s not always because he can get on one’s nerves that he is made an outcaste. Due to his ability and bad history, people consider him a jinx. Yet, Grylock seems to pay little attention to this and feels no remorse for his existence, as some think he should.
Grylock has an unusually thirst for life and practically springs out of bed in the morning and stays up all night. He can accomplish almost anything through sheer determination and will, otherwise he would be one of Pern’s dumbest people. He’s not very brightest glow around and just telling him knowledge won’t let it sink in. He’s a learn-by-experience-and-repetition kind of guy. He also hates records and scrolls; they just make him bored and sleepy. Gry says he can do anything as long as he stubborn enough; which he is, stupidly so at times.
Grylock has a strong sense of morality and tries to do the right thing. He may fail horribly at it due to his naivety, but his heart rings true. Friends are greatly cherished by Grylock, which is probably due to his loneliness. This also may be the true reason why Gry wants to impress a dragon. He doesn’t want to be alone anymore. If you can stand being around this little bugger long enough, you can find no one more loyal. He’ll go to the edge of between and beyond for you.
History:
Grylock was the result of a union between a bluerider and his mother, Gryel, headwoman at Fort Hold. The two were childhood friends and were very much liked by both Hold and Weyr. When he was born his mother died giving birth, which left him in the care of one of the hold ladies who recently had a child as well. His father, T’lock of blue Symeth, was too busy to be able to take the boy and he felt too much grief to be able see his face without thinking of his mother.
Due to his mother being so well loved at Fort and him being the direct cause of her death, many of the holdfolk had shunned the boy, which in turn the hold children followed example.
Grylock did have one person who truly cared about him and saw his potential. It was the harper of Fort Hold, Teiliam who decided to nurture and teach the boy morals. Grylock was so overwhelmed with happiness that someone actually cared about him that he absorbed as much as he could of Teiliam’s teachings. It took some knocking into his head, but they were cemented in there for life. The harper's tales of dragonriders enchanted the boy the most.
When Grylock turned eight, Teiliam suddenly got ill and had to leave for warmer climates. Before the harper left he told the boy that he loved him like a son and that his absence will only be until he got better. He left on dragon back for the Southern Continent and that was the last time Gry ever heard from him. It wasn't until three turns later that he received word that the Harper had passed away a few days after his arrival, but no one knew to tell him.
Again Gry was alone. But Gry knew that Teilim wouldn't want him to be sad so he forced himself to be happy and tried to become a harper at age 13. He was kicked out of the HarperHall for being unsatisfactory and sent back to Fort Hold. Along the way there he was caught out in thread/acid fall. He was able to find shelter in a nearby cave, but he became ill from the acid. He struggled to reach Fort and only just made it there before collapsing. He woke up several days later and realized that he had changed. It was little at first, but over the next couple of days he started noticing that strange things were happening around him. Like chairs suddenly breaking under him, a wherry laying an egg in mid flight that landed on his head, or him finding a two marks in hay he was helping move. Others from the Hold notice this and started calling him a curse.
On his 13th turn his father visited the Hold, now coming to terms with his mother's death. Symeth saw something in Grylock and decided the boy had the right stuff to impress. Gry was so ecstatic that he had the chance to become a dragonrider that he agreed to come along. While at the Weyr, he and his father finally became close as he waited for a clutch to be laid that would have his dragon. After a couple of Standings and no impression, Gry admitted to his father of his powers for he thought it might be responsible for his lack of impression.
"Son, I do not think it's because of your powers. You are not bad luck! It just that YOUR dragon hasn't been shelled yet. You have to believe no matter what! No hatchling wants to bond to someone who is unsure of themselves." T'lock patted the boy on his head, unknowing how much his word had an effect on the young boy. From that point, Grylock was always trying to be as confident in everything he did. If he just tried hard enough he will become a dragonrider.
On the night before a threadfall, T'lock asked Gry to help him fix his straps. The next day they looked as good as new with the boy's hard work and the rider put them on Symeth. The pair bid the kid goodbye before joining their wing. Yet they would never return.
During the fall T'lock's strapped failed and he fell from the blue's neck. Symeth suicided when he was unsuccessful at catching his rider. This left Grylock devastated. He really now understood why everyone hated him and started to ponder the idea of suicide. But he forced a smile on his face and denied his depression. His father, Teilim, and his mother all wanted him to live and be happy. To kill himself would make their words and efforts in vain. He could never hurt them like, even if they were all dead.
After this incident he followed the banished mutants to the South in hopes to impress from them. There was already rumors about him flying around Fort Weyr that he had a freaky power of bad luck and he personally thought that the different colored dragonrider's banishment was wrong.
Grylock now strives to become dragonrider not only to have adventures, save people, and live up to his loved one's expectations; but to also finally to have a friend. A friend who won't leave him behind.
Anything else you want to add:
*Grylock really loves girls, but girls don’t like him. XD
*He loves to sing, yet he kinda of sucks at it. However, he will have the most enthusiasm out of any singer.
