Character[/b]
Name: Shell (Aushela)
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Rank: Wingrider
Mutation: Green thumb. Shell has the ability to help plants grow, and strengthen them once they've sprouted. It makes her invaluable when the weyr is making numbweed.
Location: Skysong
Appearance:
Shell is a small woman shaped like a pear. She stands no higher than five feet and six inches in her stocking feet, and even in full riding heels, it would be pushing it to say five feet eight inches. Her skin is burnt a light brown with a perpetual tinge of red. There are odd discolorings on her face, hands, and arms that might be scars. Her upper arms bear the blistered ruin of Threadscore treated with raw numbweed rubbed too deeply, but the Southern continent is far too hot to wear the full, concealing clothing of the North. She compromises with a wrapped shirt that leaves her shoulders bare, and long, lavish bandages that go from bicep to first knuckle on both arms. Together with that are green-gray trousers that are slightly big for her pear-shaped figure and the heavy boots of riders. She wears her shoulder-length orange hair in a multitude of braids – each tipped with three glass beads – blue, clear, and black, in that order.
Personality:
With all the bandages and scars, Shell looks fairly scary. Take away the blistered scars and Threadscore, and you actually get a young woman who acts more like a wise old grandmother. Shell is a helpful person who enjoys taking time out of her day to assist somebody in need of help. Her orange hair leads many people to the conclusion that the red-head stereotype holds true, but they couldn't be...well, they could be more wrong, but they'd have to work at it. Spend as much time around plants as Shell, and you too can have a mellow personality! Her mellow personality makes her a very non-confrontational person, which comes in handy with some of the hot-head weyrlings.
History:
Aushela was born to a journeywoman vintner and her holder lover. She was raised in Fort Hold until the traditional age of apprenticeship – ten. At ten Turns of age, she was sent to the Glass Hall to learn how to make things out of glass.
The girl was no quicker than the other apprentices, but neither was she any slower than her fellow apprentices. Her steady hands made her blown pieces come out less lopsided than many apprentice-blown glass works, but her unsteady eyes failed her many times when it came to deciding whether or not the glass was heated enough. That led to more than a few exploded glass pieces, all of which landed in the cullet barrel. The scars on her arms, hands, and face are mostly from such misjudged pieces.
As an apprentice, she was the lowest of the low, and had nothing of value. It wasn't until she made journeywoman at eighteen that she had the opportunity to gain her first valuable possession, and even then, few people outside of the Glass Hall would consider it valuable – her own crucible and blowpipe. These were a gift from her Masters, and thus quite valued in the Hall.
It was a Turn later that it happened. The Red Star, with its deadly Thread, reappeared, and brought not only the searingly painful silver filaments that ate all in its path, but a new star – the Green Star – which brought devastation to Pern. Shell had been walking along a well-worn path when she noted the bursts of dragon fire above her head. In that fall, lots of Thread fell through Fort's wings. Shell managed to catch Thread on her cheek which only died when she submerged her burning face under the surface of the small stream the path followed.
She managed to make it back to the Hall, just in time for the Acid to wreak its full havoc on her. It was a full sevenday before the vicious fever broke, during which several of her fellow glassmakers had died. Shell awoke to discover that the plants kept in the infirmary had extended a branch, or leaf, or tendril to brush against some part of her body.
She was a freak.
But she was a freak who could hide her freakishness, and that stood her in good stead in the brown came sniffing around for Queen Amaranth's first clutch. There wasn't even enough time for the Threadscore to heal properly before she found herself Standing for the great queen's first clutch. To the surprise of many, the Acid had a negative effect on the clutch – mainly causing mutant colors to hatch.
One of these colors became known as iridescent, and Shell knows that particularly well because that was the dragon Shell found standing in front of herself.
Aurath wants to eat now, please.
With that, the journeywoman became a dragonrider, and the dragonrider became an outcast. She went, along with the rest of the clutchmates and a few of the older riders to the place on the Southern continent known as Skysong. Aurath seems due to rise, but Shell isn't worried – she knows the herbs required to prevent pregnancy.

Dragon Name: Aurath
Dragon Color: Iridescent
Brief Personality: Iridescent Aurath is actually a polite female, but she loves to argue and debate. This causes grief to her rider, whose philosophy is the exact opposite of being confrontational. Her personality balances out Shell's, but also clashes on occasion.
