As of late, dragons have been vanishing between, either leaving their riders Dragonless or taking them with. The trend grew quickly to epidemic proportions. People started to leave the Weyrs as the population dwindled, but at the same time, holds were being abandoned. The many Holdless formed caravans to survive, and traded with the remaining holds.
The dragons are all gone now. The last gold vanished with only sixteen eggs on the Sands as her legacy. There is hope in these eggs though, that one day the dragons will return and grow strong. Some people did not want to leave this hope to chance, however. With the aid if Kitty Ping’s diary, the eggs were enhanced. Few know the details, but most believe that dragons will not be the same.
A large caravan of Holdless looking for a place to live came to the Weyr less than a sevenday ago, looking for a place to live and thinking to find it among the remaining Weyrfolk. They arrived at Benden only to find the Weyr abandoned, with the clutch still on the sands. The only Dragonless of the group had said the eggs seemed barely a sevenday till their hatching date, and the new Weyrfolk still didn't know if they wanted them to hatch. In the meantime, there was also a fire lizard clutch with some oddities that were pegged as inbreeding of some sort.
The occupants of the eggs, it seemed, did not care about what the Holders thought. They hatched anyway, and with mixed results and a mixed reception. Not one, but two queens hatched, both of them healthy, and Impressed successfully. Among them were also a couple of bronzes and a handful of browns. There was also a silvery dragonet, larger than the bronzes and maybe even the queens, two deep purple dragonets, one with multiple personalities, and three brown dragonets that turned out to be… female. And more ominous yet, why did two of the eggs not hatch at all?
Weyrling Lessons have just begun, and the new Weyrlingmaster is not rubbing all of the Weyrlings the right way. While they are in the protective sphere of the Barracks, what kind of storm is brewing in the Weyr itself, and in Pern at large? Will the Pernese simply accept these new dragons as the last of them, and possibly the only hope, or will there be a much different reaction?
Current events at New Pern:
-Weyrling Lessons are going on
-There are a storm of plots a-brewing!
-Traders have arrived at the Weyr, and one of the Wineriders has vanished while the Headwoman haggles.
-Possibly time skip to the Weyrlings graduation - which means a hatching!
