“No Cinder come back! Leave that poor child alone!” Maria shrieked chasing after the Scarlet firelizard who was bent on chasing a young little boy who had come to close to her resting spot on a warm rock. “Don’t you dare bite him.” The girl warned, knowing clearly what the Scarlet’s bite would do. The brightly colored firelizard dove at the boy once more but gave up the chase as Maria’s mental command bent her will. Cinder let out an annoyed series of chirps in the boy’s directions but settled down on the girl’s shoulders. “What am I to do with you?” Maria sighed, pulling strands of dark brown hair out from the front of her face as she gently scratched the firelizard’s head.
She took a deep breath and looked around as she caught her breathe. Marveling at the sights of dragons sunning themselves on the ledges, she wondered what it would be like to ride on the back of one of the marvelous beasts. Back home she had seen the normal colors of dragons but here there was none to be seen; while staring in awe and wondering what had possessed the Fort Weyrwoman to send them away, she over heard the discussion that there was a three new Queen eggs. Cinder, now calm after her tirade chirped questioningly. “No I won’t forget you if I impress,” the girl promised.
Her eyes caught sight of two Iridescents playing in the water. She hoped to impress one of them, she didn’t want to be a Queen rider and didn’t believe she was cut out for it. Her heads was often in the clouds and didn’t have the patience for meetings or planning out every detail of the Weyr. Maria slowly sat down her back against a rock and her face towards the sun as the warm gentle rays beamed down upon it and let her mind wonder into daydream of her riding a dragon over the steamy nearby jungles and warm beaches.
