Character[/b]
Name: Aruzhan (A'zha if he Impresses)
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Rank: Candidate/Apprentice Harper
Mutated?: Yes. Aruzhan has the power of minor sonic manipulation. His control over it is limited, so he can usually only apply it to sounds in his immediate area (his own voice, instruments, etc.). He can alter the volume, subtly change the pitch and timbre... This allows him to move around the weyr without making any sound at all, and if he is pressed he can use sonic blasts to stun or deafen attackers, though he cannot shield himself from the effects. But more often he uses the power to impress people, manipulating his music and making himself sound like a more talented Harper than he actually is.
Location: Skysong Weyr
Appearance: Aruzhan is tall, but not excessively so, standing at about 5’11”… when he isn’t slouching, anyway. His hair is dark chocolate brown and wavy, falling to his shoulders, framing a face with sharp, chiseled features and hazel, almost golden, almond-shaped eyes. Ever since he was old enough to grow facial hair, he’s sported a faint layer of stubble, thinking it makes him look more mature and rugged. While Aruzhan’s upper body is quite toned from hard work, his lower body is… oddly lopsided. His right leg is much weaker than the left, apparent even when he has it bandaged up and covered with his pants legs, which is most of the time. Under all that, it is a mess of scar tissue from the Thread and Acid he was struck with, on the day he was mutated. He can walk, still, but he limps badly. On bad days, he is forced to use a cane, which he does only with ill humor.
Personality: Aruzhan is stubborn, emotionally aloof, and proud. He is also highly independent, preferring to solve problems by himself. Rather than ask for help, he’ll wait until he’s not just in over his head, but very nearly drowning before he’ll reluctantly let someone else rescue him… and then he’ll resent it bitterly. Emotional vulnerability is also something he loathes – though he has his moments of weakness like everyone else, he hates to be seen in such a state, and will often lash out at those who come across him like that. His greatest secret is that he’s actually much gentler than he seems. He puts up a good show of being rough and unshakable, but beneath he’s actually got something of a soft heart.
Still, he is a Harper, and he has the typical Harper’s love of an audience when he’s performing. His specialty is the gitar, which he plays passably well, but he could be better, much better, if he actually bothered to put real love and dedication into his craft. At nineteen, he could have walked the tables by now… But instead, he coasts by on natural talent and charisma, as well as his voice, which is a pleasant, sweet tenor. Aruzhan is very good at bluffing his way through and making people think he’s much better at his craft than he is… but he’s not good enough to fool the masterharpers.
Where his ambitions actually lie? That’s something of a mystery. He came to Skysong Weyr because the concept intrigued him. Exiled dragonriders? Mutant colors never before seen on Pern? Candidates desperately needed for eggs on the sands? That sounded like a chance for a brand new start, didn’t it?
History: Aruzhan was born the youngest son of a minor Holder near Southern Hold itself. While his parentage earned him status, there was simply no chance that he would inherit the Hold, with his elder brothers ahead of him. But his parents would not hear of having him sent off to any of the crafthalls… So instead, they got a local journeyman healer to act as a sort of tutor for the boy, teaching him the ways of a Harper.
But he was never really interested. He studied the craft as something to do… But it wasn’t like his life’s work. He always felt that he would be better off elsewhere. His mother promised him a firelizard egg if he could master enough of the Teaching Songs, and he did so… The little blue that hatched became one of his closest companions.
When he was sixteen, Thread and Acid returned abruptly. With Fort Weyr the only ready fighting force, the other Holds were hit hard, and Aruzhan was horrifically burned all down his leg. He was exposed to Acid at the same time. A few weeks later, he was practicing a new piece on his gitar, as he was laid up in bed with his leg crippled. He was frustrated by a particularly complicated passage – he could hear how it was supposed to sound, in his head, but he couldn’t get it to sound that way on the instrument. So he concentrated… and suddenly, it was right! At first, he thought he was just getting better at his Harper craft… But the longer it went on, the more he realized that he was actually manipulating the sound itself. It was just… turning itself into whatever he wanted it to be, just by him concentrating and thinking about it. He realized that this must be one of those ‘mutations’ that the Holders were whispering about in fear… and he realized, just as swiftly, that he mustn’t reveal his power to anyone. Except, perhaps, the newly arrived Riders of Skysong Weyr.
The next time a Searchdragon came by, shortly after the Amethyst queen’s flight, Aruzhan insisted on coming back with them. How much potential he had was largely irrelevant. He wanted to go, just to be away from the hold and doing something with his life that actually made sense to him.
Anything else you want to add:
Firelizard Name: Spitfire
Firelizard Color: Blue
Anything else you want to add: Tiny for a blue, but exceptionally fast. He is a very pale, icy blue in color.
For Candidates[/b]
Uhm... I'd like to see him on silver, blue, or crimson, but I don't have any particular preference order? ^^;
